Basic Care
Light
Your Aeonium 'Sunburst Cristatum' will thrive in bright, indirect light to full sun (morning sun is best); avoid direct afternoon sun.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Always water at the base to avoid moisture sitting in crests, which can lead to fungal issues. Water moderately during the active growing season (fall to spring). In summer dormancy, reduce watering significantly to prevent rot.
Soil & Repotting
It is best to use a well-draining succulent mix (cactus soil + perlite or sand), available at your local nursery.
If repotting, a shallow, wide pot with drainage holes is ideal, as crested aeoniums spread rather than grow deep.
Temperature & Humidity
Aeoniums prefer cooler temperatures (60-75°F / 15-24°C) and are not frost-hardy, protect from temperatures below 35°F (1°C). If you live in a cold area, bring it indoors during winter. Avoid high humidity, which can encourage rot.
Fertilizing
When fertilizing, feed with a diluted succulent fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Do not fertilize during summer dormancy.
Pruning & Maintenance
To maintain appearance and airflow, remove dead or damaged leaves. If part of the crest reverts to normal growth (round rosettes), you can trim it to preserve the crested shape.
Propagation
Crested Aeonium Sunburst is difficult to propagate due to its crested nature. It can sometimes be propagated from crested cuttings, but success varies.
Common Issues
Root Rot: Caused by overwatering—always let soil dry between watering.
Sunburn: If exposed to too much intense sun without acclimation.
Pests: Watch for aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites; treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
With proper care, this rare and beautiful succulent will remain a striking centerpiece in your collection!
